Grow Your Own Leaders

Developing leaders from within your organisation—that’s the ultimate goal, isn’t it? Identifying talent, nurturing potential, and providing opportunities for growth. But while the concept is simple, the execution is anything but straightforward.

For many organisations, leadership development is reduced to an exercise in budget management. As the financial year draws to a close, training funds are hastily spent on courses, often with little thought given to their long-term impact. Some organisations rely on standardised leadership modules—pre-recorded online content or brief, generic workshops. Others take it a step further, offering a series of courses that culminate in a “licence to lead.” Yet, for many, this is where the journey ends. Without mentorship, continued learning, or strong leadership role models, these programmes often fall short, perpetuating ineffective leadership behaviours.

True leadership development requires more than box-ticking exercises. Leadership is a journey—a craft that must be honed over time. Even the most talented leaders remain perpetual students. Harry Truman, the 33rd President of the United States, famously remarked, “Not all readers are leaders, but all leaders are readers.” This sentiment underscores the importance of continuous learning and staying attuned to evolving theories and practices. Effective training isn’t just about passive listening; it’s about active engagement. Adult education theory emphasises the power of case studies, problem-solving exercises, and collaborative discussions. Goal-oriented tasks ensure that learning is not only retained but also applied, turning theory into practice.

But training alone is not enough. The real transformation happens through mentorship. Studies show that mentorship is key to bridging the gap between learning and leadership. A recent Harvard Business Review study found that organisations with formal mentorship programmes reported an 18% increase in profits and a 20% boost in employee retention. Mentorship provides a space for employees to contextualise their training, tackle challenges, and grow under the guidance of seasoned leaders. Beyond the financial benefits, it fosters a culture of collaboration, trust, and mutual respect—qualities that elevate an organisation as a whole.

Leadership development doesn’t end with a single course or certification; it’s a lifelong commitment. Companies that embrace this philosophy reap the rewards. According to a 2023 report by Deloitte Insights, businesses that prioritise continuous leadership development achieve a 14% higher return on investment and display greater resilience during periods of disruption. Lifelong learning equips leaders to adapt, innovate, and thrive in a fast-changing business environment. By investing in continuous development, organisations are not just growing leaders—they’re building the foundation for sustained success.
